Madonna and Child

Jennifer Bell

Approx. 60 × 30 cm

Water-based paints on board

Approx. 60 × 30 cm

2000

Description:

A medieval carved Madonna and Child metamorphoses into a portrait of a real person — a friend of the artist. The work carries a clear theological argument: that the biblical figures we canonise were real people, and we should remember their lived humanity.

Inspiration:

The Incarnation as the ground of all Christian art — the biblical figures were flesh and blood, just as we are.
