Description: 

Based on a newspaper photograph of Solzhenitsyn attending a Good Friday service at the Orthodox Cathedral in London after his release from the Gulag. The trees behind him evoke prison bars. The icon he holds speaks of emergence from a form of hell.

Inspiration: 

Symbolic of resurrection — the harrowing of hell made present in a contemporary figure's survival.
